My head and heart are still full of an amazing day I experienced on Saturday – I attended Keith Abrahams Passionate Life Kickstart Workshop and it was amazing!
What follows is what I gained from my day…
Last blog we talked about Making Change Stick. The new year is a traditional moment to refelect on the past year and then move into the new year with purpose. But now I have the skinny, the down low and the secret sauce for making all your goals come to fruition! Ready?
It’s Emotion.
Keith discussed SMARTER goals. We all know SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound goals
but here’s SMARTER – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound, Emotional with a Reward
Emotional Goals – How does it make you feel?
This is the key – when you write down a goal, stop and think how it makes you feel – not setting the goal BUT “How will you feel when you achieve it?” What will it mean to you? Picture what it will look like.
This is your why and it will drive you to achieve more than you could imagine.
Keith discussed our daily activities falling into the following four groups
- Things we do that we love to do – these make us HAPPY
- Things we do that we like to do – we ENJOY these
- Things that we have to do but don’t like – we ENDURE these
- Things we have to do but hate – these EXHAUST us
So how does your life balance out? Are you recharging your emotional batteries with activities you love and like in order to persevere with that other pesky stuff? If not – chances are you’re burning yourself out.
Reward for Success
Imagine – your boss sets you a target and you meet it. Result – no recognition, no reward. Next month – same thing. How do you feel? – Motivated? Excited? Successful? Likely not.
Don’t be a bad, lazy, distracted boss! Be kind and reward yourself when you achieve your goals. When you set your goal and tune in to how you’ll feel when you get there – take it a step further and plan your reward. When you get there – celebrate your success and claim your just reward.
When you get there – celebrate your success and claim your just reward.
If you’d like to know more about Passionate Life – this is Keith’s blog. If you’d like to take some of those tasks off your plate that you endure or become exhausted by – consider outsourcing.
More importantly – do more of what you love and like – Life is too short for anything else.

Thanks for sharing your experience from the Keith Abraham workshop, Rachel. I love the concept of setting SMARTER goals and will try this, for sure. It makes a lot of sense.
You’ll go from strength to strength Susanne, good luck!
What an inspiring article Rachel! I’ve never considered writing down emotional goals as part of my business planning. Definitely going to make it part of my planning now. Thanks for sharing 🙂
It makes all the difference to be emotionally connected to your goals – here’s to your success!
Rachel, I never thought of goal setting in this way.It is how you say plan your reward and when you get their celebrate it and claim your success. Goals shouldn’t be about just planning a target and striving for that point but to enjoy the outcome of obtaining that goal. Like your article and has made me look differently at setting goals for the future and to enjoy them when obtaining them. Great knowledge and insite reading Keith’s blog to.Thank you for pointing me in that direction.
Completely agree Tony – if we don’t strive for what we are emotionally connected to we are far less likely to succeed and will value our outcomes less. Really glad you get something out of it.
